E. Ethelbert Miller was born in Brooklyn, New York on 20 November 1950. He attended New York City public schools, and enrolled at Howard University in the fall of 1968. Charles Johnson is an American novelist and fiction writer, winner of the 1990 National Book Award in fiction for his work, Middle Passage, and a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship in 1998. He served as a director of the creative writing program at the University of Washington and went on to hold the S. Wilson and Grace M.
